On Saturday Jan 14., I headed out to do my Saturday errands, hit the post office, got my nails done, got my Jeep an oil change, grocery shopped, returned a dvd to the video store, put away some xmas decorations, and most importantly…made my daily football pics.

My husband and I compete in a football pool with his grad school buddies from Baltimore. My Saturday picks, Washington over/Patriots over. Okay so I’m an optimist. When I had this optimistic thought on Sat. morning, I was thinking of Washington beating Seattle. The Patriot’s pick was a no brainer, although, there was this tiny bit of concern brewing prior to the game…

My husband, a big Patriot’s fan, typically bets against the Pats for fear he will bring them bad luck, because whenever he chooses the Pats they lose. That logic is strange to me, because even when I have doubt, I always put my money on the Patriot’s because that’s what loyal fans do! However on this day, my husband chose the Patriots.

My older brother and I exchanged our typical pre-big game phone chat an hour or so before the game. He asked what I thought, and I told him I was concerned because my husband picked the Patriot’s. Another concern, Dan Marino, had picked the Patriot’s to win this week. Dan, a former Dolphins quarterback, typically doesn’t pick the Patriots, although this has changed somewhat in recent years because he can no longer ignore the obvious. I knew if Dan picked the Pats to win, we were doomed!

I did everything right that day! I donned my #80 football jersey. I opted to stay in and watch the game, for fear going somewhere else would bring the Patriot’s bad luck, if I wasn’t in my typical seat on the coach at home drinking mudslides. I made my usual offerings to my television and adorned it with the usual Patriot’s memorabilia, mugs, ornaments, bobble-head dolls, prior to the game. I also made half-time offerings to my television and added more memorabilia from my husband’s collection in the basement. I put my usual lust for Jake Plummer in his football uniform on hold for the day, and was loyal to my Pats.

So why did they lose? THEY DID EVERYTHING WRONG!
