Recently, I was at the Barley House restaurant in Concord, NH for some pre-christmas cheer with my husband and a few of his colleagues. Concord, NH was a buzz with their annual holiday Midnight Madness event that night. As I walked from my parking spot to the bar to meet my hubby, I was immediately put in the Christmas spirit at the sight of the big Christmas Tree and festive lights in downtown Concord. My Christmas spirit grew at the sight of the happenings downtown including sleigh rides and a living display in a wedding dress shop window.

As I approached the bar I was thinking about my libation choice for the evening and wondered if I should I stray from my typical black and tan, which is my usual choice when I’m at the Barley House. Instead of my usual I asked the bartender to surprise me? Asking this question of bartenders in the past has proven beneficial, this first way I came to learn of the grape crush, grateful dead, and appletini long before they were as mainstream as they are now.  I was anticipating the bartendar to surprise me with some festive holiday drink, like a candy cane martini.

Well, I asked for a surprise and I got it - Sex with an Alligator!

Before I started writing this blog post I did a search for recipes on google to make sure I remembered the drink recipe correctly. To my surprise google returned 522 hits on my search for this drink. Currently a search for appletini returns 56,700 results. I’m assuming that 522 hits indicates that this drink is on its way to being mainstream but isn’t as new as I think it is.

Recipe for Sex with an Alligator Barley House style, which is slightly different than other variations I’ve found on the web. This a layered shot served in a martini glass - must be poured with a very steady hand to maintain perfect layers. Layers 1, 2, and 3, are poured in that order, each layer will rise as you pour the next and the 4th layer is floated on the top.
