Announcing C.K. Dexter Haven Brown (a.k.a. Nychta)

Posted at 2:57 am under Uncategorized

Dexter3.jpgIt started out as an innocent Sunday morning.  My husband and I went to breakfast and then did some errands.  On our final stop of the morning we opted to check out the new Pet Smart store in Concord, NH.  We proceeded to check out the store and picked up some bird seed for our pet cockatiel - Franne.  Then we passed an area that the SPCA occupies in the store for adopted pets.  In one of the glass boxes was a black cat just staring at me.  I went over to the glass and rubbed my fingers over it and the cat proceed to rub up against the glass.

He was so precious I couldn’t walk away.  I began talking with the SPCA representative and asked if my husband and I could visit with him.  Knowing that we have a bird I was being realistic with the SPCA rep and told her that there was no way we could adopt a cat where we have a bird.  We visited with the cat for a while.  The SPCA rep didn’t know his real name.  They had assigned him a name which he wasn’t responding to.  He just loved my husband and I.  My husband inquired how much the adoption fee was and then he told the SPCA rep that we would take the cat!  What?!?!?!?!  I couldn’t believe my ears.

We brought the cat home and my husband graciously allowed me to pick his name out.  Since the cat really adopted us I figured he should pick out his name as well.  I immediately started thinking of characters name from my favorite movies.  As he lay next to me in the living room rug I began to call him different names to see if he would respond:

“Rhett Bulter?” (from my favorite movie Gone With The Wind) - no response from the Cat

“Ashley Wilkes?” (also Gone With The Wind) - still no response from the Cat

“Danny Zucho?” (from Grease - my second favorite movie) - still no response from the Cat

“William Wallace?” (from Braveheart - my third favorite movie) - still no response from the Cat

“C.K. Dexter Haven?” (from The Philadelphia Story - fourth favorite movie) - cat responded and looked at me.  I tried it a second time to make sure “Dexter?” I called - he looked again.  So C.K. Dexter Haven Brown it is! C.K. Dexter Haven was Carey Grant’s character in the movie.  I get a silly grin everytime I call the cat picturing James Stewart stumbling around drunk calling “C. K. Dexter Haven, Oh C.K. Dexter Haven?”  My husband started calling him Dex for short.  I’m also calling him Nychta (pronounced Nick-ta) which means Night in Greek.

So how do you get a cat and a bird to coexist?
