Has advertising gone too far?

Posted at 3:46 pm under Misc.

I guess over the past few years I’ve become desensitized over the obnoxious leaps advertisers have taken like ads underneath the ice on NHL rinks.  As if the sideboards were not enough?  Then there is always the obvious Pepsi or Coke can sitting on the table in movies.  Just this morning on Good Morning America, all four broadcasters had a glass of orange juice in front of them with the Tropicana half gallon featured prominently on the table.  I usually just sigh and get past it.  As much as I’d like too, I’m not about to boycott movies or television shows for selling out.

Then I saw something the other day that disturbed me and I felt like the advertising has gone too far now.  I was watching an episode of Passions, a really silly soap opera, that I occasionally watch for a laugh.  The story lines are beyond the ridiculous, which I find amusing.  Since I’m no longer DVRless I can now tape the show every day.  While watching a scene the other day where Kay was getting dressed for her wedding, she put a necklace and earings on and suddenly during the show and her dialogue, Kay’s necklace and earings available at www.cranecouture.com, flashed along the bottom of the tv screen.  I couldn’t believe my eyes.  I rewound my DVR only to see it again.  WOW, that is just taking it a bit too far!  It is one thing to advertise something leading into a commercial, but during the scene? Aside from the fact that the Crane family is a fictional family on the soap opera, they are now advertising it as if it is a real fashion house? I find this very strange and very disturbing.  If this becomes a trend and they start interupting movies and tv shows with printed advertising during the program, while in the midst of dialogue and a scene, I will need to boycott!

Passions has had a little “boutique” for a couple of years now I think. If my memory serves me correctly, they used to have it set up by character (I could be wrong), Sheridan’ skirt, Theresa’s dress, Beth’s blouse, Luis’ shirt, etc. I think they had Martimmy glasses or shaker or something!
